Connecticut Periodontics FAQs
Get answers to our most frequently asked questions about advanced periodontics.
What does a periodontist do?
A periodontist specializes in services that prevent, diagnose, and treat disease of the tissues supporting the teeth. They also provide periodontal care services to help patients maintain healthy gums, teeth and bone.
What types of services do you offer?
Dr. Vincent LaPorta and Dr.
Sejal
Thacker has extensive experience treating gum disease, placing dental implants, and performing periodontal aesthetic procedures. They work hard to ensure patients maintain healthy gums for life and use advanced technologies and digital equipment, including dental lasers, to generate optimal results.
What are my options for replacing missing teeth?
We offer a wide range of options for patients with missing teeth. Your advanced periodontics treatment plan may include dental implants, All-on-4® prostheses, or implant supported dentures. We can discuss the benefits and drawbacks of all of these treatments during your consultation.
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease is a bacterial infection in the mouth that can cause irreversible bone damage and tooth loss if left untreated. Poor oral hygiene is one of the most common causes of gum disease. Advanced periodontics treatments are designed to improve unhealthy gum tissue and restore the mouth to a healthier state.
What are some symptoms of gum disease I should be aware of?
If you notice your gums are bleeding when you brush and floss or you have swollen, tender gums, you may have gum disease. Other symptoms include persistent bad breath and loose or shifting teeth. The early stages of gum disease are fairly easy to address with non-surgical treatment. If the condition progresses to later stages, you may need more aggressive treatment with laser therapy and other techniques.
At what age should children start seeing a dentist?
We recommend taking children to see their general dentist for the first time between 18 and 24 months. However, if at any time you notice issues or have concerns with the gums or new teeth growing in, it is important to see a dentist immediately.
How often should I see my dentist?
You need to visit your dentist for a teeth cleaning at least twice a year and at least once a year to monitor your oral health with a comprehensive exam. You may need more frequent visits if you have gum disease or other oral health problems.
