Oral Cancer Prevention &
Tooth Extraction Services

Helping Patients Maintain Optimal Oral Health

Importance of an Oral Pathology Exam

Oral cancer is an extremely dangerous health problem and must be diagnosed early. We encourage all patients to undergo an oral pathology exam at least once a year so that we can examine the tongue and soft tissues for any suspicious lesions, sores, and red or white patches. In some cases, further testing of abnormalities will be needed to confirm a diagnosis.

What to Expect with an Oral Cancer Exam

This comprehensive exam usually involves a visual screening to identify any areas where abnormalities appear. We may take a set of pictures with an intraoral camera to document lesions on each visit. In some cases, a biopsy is performed and sent to a pathology lab for analysis. Conducting self-oral cancer screenings between visits can help to detect and diagnose problems early.

Reasons to Undergo a Tooth Extraction

If you have a serious infection or teeth with extensive decay, you may need to have those teeth removed permanently. Other reasons to undergo a tooth extraction include:

  • Severe gum disease and bone loss
  • Orthodontic treatment preparation
  • Fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic concerns
  • Crowded teeth

Types of Tooth Extractions

Our doctors will perform either a surgical or simple tooth extraction depending on whether the tooth is erupted or sitting below the gum line, and the overall condition of the tooth and its surrounding socket. The simple extraction technique helps us remove erupted teeth fairly easily. The surgical technique is used when we need to perform a tooth extraction below the gum line or section a tooth to allow for removal. Extractions can be performed under local anesthesia so that the area being treated is completely numb throughout the procedure and for several hours afterwards. We will provide you with post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing of the tissues following a tooth extraction.
