He then went on to graduate from the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated with special recognition for his proficiency in periodontics. He completed his post-graduate periodontics residency at the University of Maryland and has been practicing for almost 20 years. In addition to private practice, Dr. LaPorta serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine where he lectures and provides clinical instruction to the periodontal residents. This affords him the opportunity to work closely with the dental education community and helps him maintain his high standards of providing continuing education. Dr. LaPorta is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a member of both the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association. In addition, he was the past president of both the Manchester Dental Society and the Connecticut Society of Periodontists. He has experience in dental research and has been published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology on the topic of pathologic lesions of the gingiva. Dr. LaPorta has volunteered his dental services locally by participating in Connecticut's Mission of Mercy Events. He has also traveled to Amazonian Peru as a member of a health care team to provide dental treatment for under-served areas. He plans to continue to contribute his services as an advocate for those in need and he is eager to begin his next venture soon. In his spare time, Dr. LaPorta enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, Nick and Sophia. In addition, he can often be found enjoying his favorite pastimes, fishing, kayaking, and fishing from his kayak. She completed her post-graduate periodontics training alongside a masters in dental sciences at the University of Connecticut in 2012. She has been practicing clinical periodontics in private practice for over ten years. In addition to private practice, Dr. Thacker serves as the Program Director of the post-graduate program in Periodontics at the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine. She provides lectures and clinical instructions to the periodontal residents and has mentored many students who have gone on to successful practices in Connecticut and beyond. She was recognized as a rising star and future leader by the American Academy of Periodontology in 2018 and has received multiple awards as an educator, namely, “The Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Award” by the American Academy of Periodontology in 2015 and 2019 and the coveted “Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship” in 2020. Dr. Thacker is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration and an ITI fellow. In addition, she has served on various committees and task forces at state and national-level dental organizations. Dr. Thacker has experience in dental research on topics such as periodontal plastic surgery, dental implants, loading and imaging related to implant surgery. She has published her research in peer reviewed journals and lectures extensively on these topics. In her spare time, Dr. Thacker enjoys spending time with her husband Ajay and her two young children, Krish and Meera. In addition, she is an avid cook and can often be found hiking the countryside of Connecticut. She graduated from Duke University with a bachelor's degree in Evolutionary Anthropology. After leaving CT for a few years, she came back to attend the University of Connecticut, School of Dental Medicine, where she received recognition for outstanding achievement in periodontics. Along with her dental degree, she graduated with a certificate in Social Determinants of Health & Disparities. She completed her postgraduate periodontics residency and master's in dental science at the University of Connecticut where she studied under fantastic dental educators, including both Drs. LaPorta and Thacker. During dental school, Dr. Zhang traveled to Neltume, Chile to provide dental treatment for residents in the nearby rural communities. Her community work also involved teaching health education to students at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, CT. Dr. Zhang is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, and Connecticut State Dental Association. Her research during dental school on the periodontal health of patients with End-Stage Renal Disease sparked her initial interest in Periodontics. Her master's research in residency focused on understanding the diagnostic challenges in patients with desquamative gingivitis. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Zhang also teaches a gentle yoga class in Cromwell. In her free time, she enjoys reading and crocheting, as well as spending time with her husband Chris and two cats, Bobo and Shagua. Her favorite activity in Glastonbury is going blueberry picking during the summertime.
