Scaling and Root Planing for Gum Disease

When Untreated Gingivitis Develops Into Periodontitis

If you have been diagnosed with periodontitis, a condition that often results when gingivitis is left untreated, you may be a good candidate for scaling and root planing therapy. Dr. Vincent LaPorta and Dr. Sejal Thacker have extensive experience performing periodontal treatments with high success rates. Scaling and root planing is an effective non-surgical treatment option for patients in the early stages of gum disease.

Gum Disease Treatment Without Surgery

In the past, surgical removal of infected tissue was the only treatment option for gum disease patients. Our doctors and hygienists have mastered non-surgical techniques that allow us to clear away plaque and tartar accumulation that is causing gum infection, clean deep below the gum line using special tools, and smooth out any rough surfaces on the roots so the gums can reattach to the tooth structure. This process reduces pocket depths as the gums heal and can be a viable alternative to surgery.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing Therapy

Scaling and root planing offers numerous benefits to patients with gum disease, including:

  • No surgical removal of gum tissue

  • Performed under local anesthesia or Oraqix® Minimal to no pain and discomfort after treatment

  • Does not damage teeth and gums

  • Reduces periodontal pocket depths

  • Progressive results after a single treatment

Undergoing Non-Surgical Gum Disease Treatment

If you have gingivitis and it is left untreated, you may need treatment with scaling and root planing therapy. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or we can numb the area with Oraqix®, a needle-free anesthetic. We will clean deep below the gum line using ultrasonic tools and specialized hand instruments, and may recommend using prescription strength homecare products to reduce the risk of further infection.
